I am in awe of how God is working and fall to my knees in humble gratitude that I am not alone in my desperate cry for more of God and His Word in my heart.
I’ve heard from beautiful women… stay-at-home moms, working moms… single, married… new moms, seasoned moms… dedicated youth, sweet grandmothers… from the United States, from around the world… beloved real-life friends, treasured friends I will never meet this side of heaven… many bringing their boys and girls along with them… all joining together to commit our hearts to Him by hiding His Words in our hearts. Words powerful enough to pierce the enemy.
And I don’t have a plan- besides for dividing the verses up into the next ten weeks- I’m just not sure how this is all going to look.
I just found myself no longer able to leave my Sword at the side of my bed, and prayed I wasn’t the only one struggling to fight on my own.
As my Bible hangs open to Psalm 145, I find myself basking in those first two verses.
Thousands of moments seek to pull me away, but the words are sweet on my lips as I clean up puddles of spilled milk on the floor. And praise rings in my heart as I cook and clean and discipline and teach and snuggle and fail and forgive and love.
Each an act of praise to my God, the King!
Every breath a whisper of His name. Yahweh.
A name so holy. A name unutterable in Hebrew. The sound of breathing.
I breathe His name in, with each shiny piece of glitter on toes, in hair, on cheeks.
And exhale His praise.
To get words to move from page to heart…
Breathe it in- Take a mental photograph engraving each word (& reference number) in your mind as you read it. Then read it again and again.
Dwell in it- Act it out, use motions or sign-language, put it to music, write it down (small or BIG- on the mirror, on the sidewalk, on a napkin, with paint, with glitter…), draw it up, hang it all over, listen to it being read, type it out (try “Scripture Typer”… be warned that it’s addicting), teach it to your kids, make it a game, stand on your head if you have to… Do whatever it takes to get your mind focused on each word.
Bind it to your life- Breathe the words in before your feet touch the floor in the morning, and out again in the carpool line, while folding laundry and cooking supper, as you brush your teeth and tuck the kids in bed. Attach these life giving words to a specific time or activity in your day.
“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.”
Deuteronomy 11:18-21
Absorb it- Find out what the words mean that you are memorizing. Who wrote them? Why? What does each word mean? Soak in the truth.
Breathe it out- Aloud to yourself, whisper it in the depths of your soul, and share it with those who need to hear it the most. Each week, commit to telling it (without peeking) to an accountability partner. Make it a part of your every day speech. And pray it, pray it, pray it.
Live it- Don’t stop at memorizing, allow God’s Word to penetrate your heart and change your life.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” Colossians 3:16
Guard it- Again and again and again. Hold fast to His Words as you repeat and review. For this is what leads to life-giving retention.
How do you get His Words in your heart?
I’d love to hear how memorizing is coming for you {Here, or on our Facebook page if that’s easier.}! And, it’s not too late to join in! Remember, if it’s important to us, we will make the time… if it’s not, we just make excuses.
Praying for you all as we begin this journey!

Checking out the Scipture Typer! Never heard of that before but I need some help with lots of verses I had memorized two years ago as part of my new years’ resolution that I’m soooo rusty on. Going to hopefully re-learn those and start some new ones. Thanks for the tip!!
Thanks, Britt! I just found out about Scripture Typer a couple weeks ago, and now it is really neat! I’m thankful for that resource!
Hope you’re having a good week!
Jessica
Love in that trying to memorize I am prompted to figure out what the words really mean. Like exalt. The first verse takes on a whole new meaning when thinking on the definition.
I also think to myself that this chapter has many verses and how am I to ever remember them. However, when talking to Autumn about it this morning she reminded me that if you can memorize the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalm, plus remember the words to an entire song, memorize Shakespeare (I haven’t done that but she has) than this should be no problem. Love that girl! Thank you for your faithful guidance in this area and for sharing not only what God has placed on your heart but encouraging others like myself who are desperate for HIS word right now!
So true, Amy! Precious Autumn, for helping us all see that memorizing Scripture shouldn’t be as hard as it seems. ;)
Oh, how I long for more of His Word in my life!
Sending love, Jessica
I too am craving God’s word and desiring to arm myself with it. Thank you for challenging us and encouraging us. I just checked out scripture typer…AMAZING! I am going to us this to help me in my journey in memorizing Psalm 145.
YAY! It’s addicting, isn’t it!? Such a fun new way of getting those words into our minds!
So blessed you’ll be joining us!
Hope you and your sweet family are well!
